Brunel University in West London is a dynamic institution with nearly 15,000
students and 1,770 academic and related staff operating in a vibrant culture
of research excellence. Since 2001, Brunel has invested £20m to support
100 new academic posts in areas of existing or emerging research strength.
Total research income over the 2007/2008 period was £18,500,000
(€21,5million). Brunel comprises of 8 academic Schools and 7 Specialist
Research Institutes, conducting research ranging from social sciences to
engineering to health and social care. The national 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise confirmed its status as a research-intensive university
with 82% of staff conducting research of international standing and 10% of
its research rated as of world-class. The University is committed to
delivering excellent research which underpins high quality, innovative
training and teaching, and also generates new knowledge and understanding
for the benefit of both the UK, and the international community. Moreover,
it actively seeks to foster the integration of learning and research, and their
application to real problems. The School of Information Systems,
Computing and Mathematics (SISCM) is a world-class centre of excellence
for interdisciplinary research involving applied and computational
mathematics, biological and healthcare informatics, human-computer
interaction, information systems, intelligent data analysis, mathematical
physics, software engineering, statistics and operational research. SISCM
receives substantial financial support for research activity from the UK
Research Councils, the European Union and other sources. The school is
home to staff who are recognised and honoured for their top-quality
publications and leading roles in their disciplines, and hosts one of the
largest and strongest PhD programmes in the country, with over 160
currently registered research students.
